StoryCorps is a perfect fit as we explore the amazing diversity of the little and big humans who learn and work at Seven Hills. If you haven’t checked it out, just take a second and listen to a story at StoryCorps.org.
StoryCorps’ mission is to “provide people of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share and preserve the stories of our lives. We do this to remind one another of our shared humanity, to strengthen and build the connections between people, to teach the value of listening, and to weave into the fabric of our culture the understanding that everyone’s story matters.”
At College Week, on Tuesday through Thursday, there will be a StoryCorps tent set up on the quad for scholars or staff to go, in pairs, to record a spoken story on an iPad. Graduated 8th Graders will be running the tent and will have a list of developmentally appropriate “StoryCorps Great Questions” to prompt stories from participants. Stories should be very brief, typically lasting only 2 minutes or less. It is simply one human telling a meaningful and true story to another human, prompted by Great Questions suggested by StoryCorps.
On Friday, families and scholars walking around during the Showcase of Majors are invited to visit the StoryCorps tent to listen to some of the stories recorded that week. The goal is to loop our families into our shared humanity – and our school community – through the power of storytelling by pausing to listen to one another. After College Week, the stories will be organized on an internal Moodle site where scholars and staff can listen to each other’s stories that strengthen our “shared humanity.”
